I asked a few climbers this question last Saturday and the consensus reply was “Solitude”. One person mentioned climbing on the rim. This started as the Pound rim, but could extend to the rim of the arid interior or the rim of comfort. This is certainly an important component to me. Moonarie requires effort and commitment. From the walk up each day to the psyche needed for long hard pitches in exposed positions. It builds confidence and competence. The soaring corners and cracks, wide open faces and airy roofs are both inspiring & daunting. It’s not the consumer climbing of Arapiles or much of the Gramps. It’s less accessible, requires competent gear placement and the best routes are all long and hard. Perched on the margin of the vast inland it has a timeless feel that nourishes the spirit. You won’t go home disappointed. It’s hard to capture in words but your guide (words & images) goes a long way toward doing so.
